Abstract

Work developed by Fals Borda, Freire and some community social psychologists, offer interpretations regarding community work and the process of consciousness raising. However these works have not incorporated the interpretation of the main actors of these processes: community members. The research we present, was oriented towards understanding and interpreting the conception that community members who participate, and those who do not participate in community psychosocial work have, regarding this type of work and of the consciousness raising process. For achieving purpose we undertook a quialitative research project in a community in Caracas. The information gathered by means of in depth interviews was analysed through qualitative content analysis. Results allowed us to learn that: a) community psychosocial experience had a positive impact on the participants of such experience in the areas of personal development and group functioning; b)consciosness raising appeared as a process which began before community psychologists initiated their work in the community, and was conceived as a dynamic and constant process generated by action-reflection cycles (Freire's methodological proposal) and action-reflection (Fals Borda's proposal) which configurate a personal history of lived experiences; c) consciousness raising experience promoted by community social psychologist impacted only participative community members.
